Mosque of Pasha Qasim

The Downtown Candlemas Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary formerly known as the Mosque of Pasha Qasim (Turkish: Gazi Kasım Paşa Camii) is a Roman Catholic church in Pécs. It was built by Pasha Qasim the Victorious between 1543 and 1546. The Mosque of Pasha Qasim is one of the symbols of the city of Pécs, located in the city centre, on the main square (Széchenyi square). In 1660’s of Evliya Çelebi, the famous Turkish traveller wrote of the greatness of this building. The minaret of the mosque was demolished by the Jesuits. It is still one of the largest Ottoman Turkish buildings that remains in Hungary. It harbours the characteristics of Ottoman Turkish and Islamic architecture.
